About This Quote

My Aunt Helen was my favorite person in the whole world. She was my mom’s sister. She got straight A’s when she was a teenager and she used to give me books to read. My father said that the books were a little too old for me, but I liked them so he just shrugged and let me read.

Obviously, my father let me read because he believed that it would make me smarter. In this case, I don't think he made enough of an effort to make sure I understood what I was reading. He didn't take the time to ask me why I liked the books, or how it made me feel, or what I thought about the ideas in them.

Instead, he just let his daughter taste knowledge without checking to see if I was ready for it.
